After the British surrendered in 1781, the United States set about the hard work of forging a nation. But it wouldn’t be easy, for the Articles of Confederation were not holding the country together. The People needed something more. They needed a Constitution. At the same time, black leaders began to take the first steps toward freedom during the momentous year of 1787.
